A P P : Think Dirty. Shop Clean.

This post is from the wifey, Brittany Kimmell,  on an awesome app that allows you to scan your personal products to see how bad they are for you.  Read below on our experience and shock when we realized some of our basic products like body wash had serious long term health effects.  Very eye opening.  Scan your bathroom!

The other night, my husband and I went on a scanning spree in our bathroom.

Now, before I explain what in the world I’m talking about, here’s a little background: My husband and I work together at a Tech Startup here in Boulder, CO – we both get excited over anything tech related (I would consider myself a huge Beauty Geek), so when I heard of an iPhone App focused on safe beauty education, I was all about it!

Let me introduce you to your new best friend: Think Dirty.

Think Dirty has developed a ridiculously awesome iPhone App that allows you to scan the barcodes of personal care products to see how they rate on the “Dirty Meter”, a scale that assesses the product’s health risks. How awesome is that? Simply scan your products and the app does the rest! They’ve made learning about the safety of your personal care products so easy and really fun, you have no reason not to give it a try.

You might be surprised to find that some products you’re already using are super safe and you were being health conscious without even trying – way to go you safe shopper, you! But, you might also find that there are some products in your bathroom that aren’t so friendly. I was definitely shocked by a couple of mine and so was my husband (he was pretty much ready to throw away everything and start from scratch).

Transitioning to safe products is a process. Learning about your products should be fun! Don’t judge yourself (or others) – we’re constantly being sold on nonsafe products, it’s easy to buy into the advertisements and promised results, especially with the low price tag that many come with.

Take your time – start by replacing one product. Next time you run out of a risky product, try replacing it with a safer version. Eventually, your entire bathroom will be safe! I know next time I’m at the store, I’ll be secretly scanning potential products before purchasing them…

But tonight, feel free to download Think Dirty and go on a scanning spree to see what you’ve got hidden in your cabinets! When you’ve picked a few products you’d like to replace, check out Beautycounter. All their products are safe and can be trusted. I’d love to help you decide on a new safe alternative so reach out if you want any suggestions.
